Since the goal of this effort is to send a message to the web developer community that they need to be secure, our work here will be most effective if coordinated across the web community. With HSTS and the upgrade-insecure-requests CSP attribute, the “http” scheme can be automatically translated to “https” by the browser, and thus run securely. It should be noted that this plan still allows for usage of the “http” URI scheme in legacy content.

There have also been some proposals to limit the scope of non-secure cookies. For example, Firefox already prevents persistent permissions for camera and microphone access when invoked from a non-secure website. We’re also already considering softer limitations that can be placed on features when used by non-secure sites. So we will have to monitor the degree of breakage and balance it with the security benefit. Removing features from the non-secure web will likely cause some sites to break. The second element of the plan will need to be driven by trade-offs between security and web compatibility. But it would still restrict qualitatively new features, such as access to new hardware capabilities. That would allow things like CSS and other rendering features to still be used by insecure websites, since the page can draw effects on its own (e.g., using ). For example, one definition of “new” could be “features that cannot be polyfilled”.

Rob Lord, the founder of Songbird, is also a shareholder and board member of Heatseek.Ī note to would-be users: Many employers (and spouses) install monitoring software on computers that Heatseek will not bypass.Today we are announcing our intent to phase out non-secure HTTP. The Heatseek team is making significant efforts to remain anonymous, although there is at least one tie to another browser startup – the Mozilla-based media browser Songbird. The premium version also allows users to access “special content”. The main feature of the premium version is that it allows the user to unencrypt downloaded files and move them directly to the hard drive for use in other browsers and media players. The basic version of Heatseek is free, with a premium version available for a one time fee of $20. Heatseek is also guaranteeing that their software contains no spyware. They’ve included a bookmark feature that allows users to quickly jump to their “favorite” scene (see last screenshot below). Downloaded files can be organized in, well, playlists, and can be dragged and dropped to reorganize. As mentioned above, these files are encrypted and can only be opened within Heatseek. On the ease-of-consumption side: Downloading of images and videos is assumed, and can be accomplished with a single click. Finally, they’ve even included a panic button to shut down the application immediately. They do their best to eliminate popups, spyware and viruses. Downloaded files are encrypted and viewable only through Heatseek. On the security side: Credentials are needed just to open the browser. I’ll walk through some of the features first and save my editorial for the end. Every feature is aimed at either making porn consumption easier or making it less likely that others will know what you are up to.
